Top of the Tufa
A Violet-Green Swallow pauses briefly on a tufa stack before resuming dive-bombing Alkali Flies.

Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel
At first I thought this was some sort of chipmunk, but the plain face marks it as a Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel. (There were also chipmunks by the lake, but they were much more shy.)

Peekaboo
A Great-Horned Owl chick peeks out from behind a eucalyptus tree. While these trees are highly invasive, the owls don’t mind one bit, and often prefer them as nesting habitat in California.

Cactus Wren Portrait
A Cactus Wren poses on its favorite cactus. Commonly known as Teddy Bear Cholla, this cactus is ready to give fleshier visitors a big prickly hug as they brush by, but the wrens love to perch and feed on them.

Survivor
This Black Bear looks like he has a bit of a blep, but his lip is is scarred, shredded from where another bear’s claw caught it in a fight. He’s still living his best bear life from what I could tell.

Sierra Bear
I was hiking through a meadow in the Sierra when I spotted this Black Bear. We were both pretty surprised to see each other. Black Bears are pretty shy, so he turned around and ran away, but not before flashing his stylish ascot.

A small but fierce Rock Wren defends its tufa territory.
