About the Locations in This Guide
All locations are publicly accessible places listed in birding or photography guides. Most are within a 2 hour drive of San Francisco.
There are many views on the ethics of disclosing photography locations (this is a good example). I do not list the locations of sensitive animals including owls, locally threatened species, or endangered species, even if other guides do so. I don’t list small or out of the way locations not found in typical birding/wildlife guides. If I learn about a location from a professional guide or another individual, I err on the side of respecting their preferences for how precisely to reveal its location.
There are many excellent places to photograph wildlife not found in this guide. The goal is to provide a starting point to make aesthetically pleasing photographs of the Bay Area’s wildlife, not to provide a comprehensive listing.
