One of my photographic goals for 2026 was to track down and photograph a Great Gray Owl. What should I aim for next? A frame-filling shot of a Gray Wolf?

I was very grateful for a quiet couple of hours spent mostly alone with this owl. They’re truly spectacular hunters. I don’t know if they just do this when their prey is under the snow, but it didn’t so much swoop as float gently and stealthily down catch an unsuspecting mouse under to the snow. While I was lucky enough to be welcomed into its world for a couple of hours, eventually some more people showed up and the owl decided it needed more solitude. I get it.
