This is probably my favorite photo from 2023. It’s not the prettiest foreground and background, but Point Reyes gets pretty scruffy in late fall. And it matches this guy, who’s gone through a few things.

This was one of those moments that you always hope for, but rarely get to experience in wildlife photography. I saw this Coyote walking across a field towards a patch of scrub. I figured I could wait on the other side of scrub, and maybe if I got lucky the Coyote would keep coming my way, giving me an opportunity at something close to a head-on shot. Just as I had hoped, the Coyote picked its way through the scrub, and emerged facing right towards me. We locked eyes and I felt like I was invited into his world for just a brief moment, before he went back to ignoring me, turned right, and continued along his way.
