From this spring, a Great-Horned Owl lands on his favorite perch before starting his evening hunt.
I had hoped to do create an even better version of this photo, but right after I figured out the perfect composition, the owl shifted his pattern and stopped using this perch to start his night. On that evening, he buzzed within a few feet of my head while I had my tripod-mounted camera pointed at this perch. All I could do was watch and listen as I heard the soft whooshes of his wingbeats as he passed over me.
It would have been epic to get a frame-filling shot of an owl flying right at me, but my camera needed to be on the tripod to give me the best chance of catching the landing with everything framed up correctly. Zero regrets despite neither shot coming together.
