Evening Visitor
A half hour after sunset, the Barn Owls gain confidence. This one flew in and perched nearby to investigate me. As I stayed still and showed it I was a harmless observer, it turns its attention to scanning the area for prey before continuing along the fence line.

Meal With a View
I’ve always said the quality of restaurants’ food falls as the views improve. This Red-Tailed Hawk might agree as its gopher meal at Café de los Reyes is marred by the inclusion of intestines. Red-Tailed Hawks are somewhat picky eaters, carefully discarding the digestive tract even as they gobble up the rest of the animal.…

Dine and Dash
After polishing off a gopher, a Red-Tailed Hawk flies to a higher perch. Note the bulging crop. The hawk will store its meal in the crop temporarily while it continues to soften, and then gradually consume its meal over the course of the day.

Night Flight
Unlike Great-Horned Owls, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Barn Owl emerge from cover before sunset. Fortunately, it was a clear night, so I was able to capture this ghost gliding by 20 minutes after sunset.
