A Puma gazes out over the Paine Massif.
Taken on a Puma photography tour with @danieldietrichphoto, which was truly an unforgettable experience. For all the photos I’ve seen of Pumas and the Torres del Paine, I still wasn’t prepared for the feeling of being out in the wild Patagonian landscape watching these majestic cats go about their daily lives.
With this first shot, I wanted to highlight the scale of this landscape. While it’s traditional to go for shots of the pumas as big as possible next to the iconic Torres del Paine towers (and don’t worry, I have one of those coming), the reality is that these cats are pretty hard to find! Even in the best habitats, they top out at around 13 cats per 100 square miles. Home ranges overlap, but that means about one cat for every 3 square miles. Imagine searching all of San Francisco to find one of just 6 animals.
