
I usually prefer my birds photos to be less branchy, but this is the best shot I’ve yet to manage of a Wrentit, so you get to deal with a branchy photo.
Wrentits are kind of fascinating if you’re into taxonomy. Their name doesn’t reflect any relationship to wrens or tits. It’s pretty much ornithologists throwing up their hands in despair at classifying them. They’ve recently been classified into the the family Paradoxornithidae, which is Latin for “we don’t know WTF is going on with these birds, but they’re all genetically related.” The family’s common name Parrotbills is yet another taxonomic cry of despair.
Wrentits are only found on the west coast of North American, and they’re the only members of Paradoxornithidae found outside Asia.
